Master Plan for development of Sunset Farm
In the fall of 2010, the Parks Department asked the Friends of Sunset Farm to come up with a master plan for the long range development of Sunset Farm Park. The board members, with technical assistance of member Heather Cruise, worked on the plan for the Park over the winter. We presented it to the Parks Director and to the Whatcom Parks Commission in April of 2011 and have gained their approval of the overall plan.
Please note however that items in the Short Range, Mid Range and Long Range Sections will require other "approvals", ie: grade and fill permit; storm water and wetland studies; SEPA review, etc. Not to mention some serious fund raising!
The Friends of Sunset Farm have the capital in hand to provide the items in the Immediate Improvement Section.
1. Immediate Improvements (Summer of 2011) COMPLETED!

1. Immediate Improvements (Summer of 2011) COMPLETED!
- Add water line extensions with freezeless hydrants to serve the existing arena and the paddock area.
- Move the sign/ kiosk/ donation canister to the west side of the lane leading to the paddocks; for better visibility by park users.
- Build two 12' x 12' compost bins with concrete ecology blocks on the concrete slab remaining from the old dairy barn.
- Build a graveled path from the parking area to the SE corner of the existing arena. This will provide all weather access from the parking area to the arena.
- Build another set of 10 paddocks for additional stabling during organized activities. Two additional paddocks built in 2014, four more planned for 2015
- Expand the existing gravel parking lot.
- Engage a professional builder to create an outdoor trail obstacle training course. Our first choice would be Mark Bolender, who has built a number of courses, including the one at the Washington State Horse Park in Cle Elum.
- Install all weather sand footing in the round corral. COMPLETED November 2013
- Extend the graveled access lane to the paddock area for truck and trailer access as well as a graveled access lane to the shed at the NE corner of the existing arena.
- Build a second outdoor arena with a softer/ deeper footing that would suit other equestrian disciplines and provide a warm up arena during organized shows.
- Extend the graveled access lane to the new arena
- Add a water line extension with a freezeless hydrant to serve the new arena.
- Create several RV parking spots WITH hookups
- Install lighting for the existing arena that would be available on a "pay by the hour" basis
